When children have asthma, that doesn’t mean they can’t be active, or even play some sports.
If your child’s asthma is being properly treated by your doctor, your child can participate in many healthy activities.
Asthma controller medications taken daily can help prevent an asthma attack. Make sure your child always has asthma medication nearby during activities. Keep track of your child’s symptoms during activities, and after.
Talk to the coach or instructor about your child’s condition, and have an action plan in place if your child has an asthma attack during play.
These sports can be easier for children with asthma:
Swimming and other water exercise, as the wet, humid environment is better for breathing; and
Activities that don’t require constant action, like baseball, gymnastics, or martial arts.
Hockey or skiing are more likely to trigger an asthma attack, due to the cold, dry air. Sports that have your child constantly moving, like soccer, basketball and track, may also need to be avoided.
Talk to your child’s doctor about the right activities for your child.
