Twelfth Annual Travers Wine Tasting
August 27, 7 p.m.
Seniors Services of Albany presents the Twelfth Annual Travers Wine Tasting event, Friday August 27th, 7 p.m. at the National Museum of Racing, Saratoga Springs. This event benefits Senior Services of Albany's Meal on Wheels program and other senior-related services. This events features wine tasting, great cuisine, jazz music and silent and live auctions. Get connected at the Bender Computer Lab
The Bender Computer Lab located in the Louise Corning Senior Center, 25 Delaware Avenue, Albany is now open. The new lab is a project of Senior Services of Albany and is specifically aimed at helping older adults learn more about computers, social networking, email and the art of getting connected.
Becoming comfortable with computers and on-line technologies is a vital step that all older adults need to take in order to remain connected to the world at large and to their families and friends. The benefits of learning new technology are huge, and extend beyond creating connections to actually impacting brain function, as evidenced in the story below.
For those who may not have the financial means to have a home computer, or for those who may be intimidated by technology, the Bender Computer Lab will offer a safe haven and an open door. We have a series of classes scheduled from basic introductory to private mentoring by appointment. Drop-in hours will also be available. Monthly schedules for the lab will be posted on our web site, seniorservicesofalbany.com, and can also be picked up at Louise Corning Center. Information by phone is available at 465-3325.
Making Sense of Medicare
Medicare can be very confusing, even if you are already enrolled. Seniors must select from a dizzying array of options, including 50 different Medicare health insurance plans, 12 supplemental insurance (Medigap) policies and 48 prescription drug plans. It is no wonder that people may need assistance in evaluating Medicare plans and identifying those that best fit their needs.
If you have questions about Medicare and reside in Albany County, you are eligible for free, personal Medicare counseling through the HIICAP program (NYS Health Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program). A trained HIICAP counselor is available every Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Louise Corning Senior Center, 25 Delaware Ave. in Albany. She will answer your questions about Medicare benefits, coverage options, out-of-pocket costs and provide one-on-one counseling to help you evaluate and compare plans.
